BACKGROUND OF ADAPT ORGANISATION

Goal and objectives

The goal of ADAPT Organisation is: To contribute to reduction of alcohol and drug related harm in the society. The objectives are:
1. To prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the community by creating awareness about the prevalence and effects.
2. To do brief intervention in the community targeting people who are in early stages of alcohol and drug abuse, especially youth in-and-out of school.
3. To rehabilitate people who abuse and are addicted to alcohol and drugs.
4. To empower illicit brewers/traders of alcohol spiritually, psychologically, socially and economically to quit illegal activities and live dignified and healthy lives, Birth of ADAPT Organisation.

In 1999 a small group of passionate volunteers started sensitizing the community in Kipchamo Location about the harmful effects of alcohol abuse, and that change is possible. They were taken by surprise when illicit brewers came forward asking:” how can we change?” The only thing that the volunteers could say was: “we will pray about it and then we come back to you. After discussing and researching they came up with organizing self-help groups for illicit brewers and alcoholics. In 2004 the group registered as a CBO, and in 2008 as an NGO. Progress of the Organisation

Since that time the target area of the organization widened to other locations in Uasin Gishu County. Through a Community Based Programme approximately 500 brewers changed positively to make a living in alternative ways. And approximately 30 alcoholics quit alcohol and remained sober. Many pupils and students in primary and secondary schools received preventive education, and church leaders were trained to integrate community sensitization to alcoholics in their ministry.
ADAPT organized seminars for teachers aiming to understand children from alcoholic homes. Other activities that ADAPT Organisation has been involved in are: peer-counselling in Eldoret Main Prison; trauma counselling after post-election violence in 2008; and various HIV programmes.

In 2017 ADAPT opened ADAPT-Rapha Rehabilitation Centre for persons who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. The most common substance use disorders that are seen in the centre are: dependence on alcohol, various tobacco products, cannabis (bhang), and miraa (khat).
The centre has 8 beds. Clients are admitted for a programme of 3 months. Clients come from all over Kenya. Community outreaches are also on-going.
